Dont have hundreds of dollars to put towards a tile backsplash? or you just want an alternative to tile?

This wooden backsplash has the WOW factor you are looking for in just a few steps!

Get ready to WOW

ree

First I measured the space.

We had about 40 square feet of backsplash to cover. The best part about this coverage is you only need to buy HALF of your square footage! (ill show you why soon)

So thats 20 square feet and we ended up buying four [3/4 inch] thick boards at 8 inches wide and 10 feet long.

(I chose knotty pine, its easy to work with and budget friendly. plus we liked the knotty look. and if you don't you can just not use the pieces with knots!

Then we chose to make the pieces 3 1/2 inches thick so we ripped all the boards down to size. [Do this before ripping them to be thinner, its safer)

Now we have 8 boards [3 1/2 wide] so its time to cut them in half (from their height)

Our boards are [3/4] thick thats [6/8] and your saw blade is [1/8] so I set the table saw to [3/8] and then your other side will end up being [2/8] But you can choose your design thickness

Watch Those fingers!

Once thats done. decide the length your going to use. You can cut them all to different lengths or stick to more of a pattern like we did. we used 8 inch pieces. so our wooden tiles end up being [3 1/2 inches wide by 8 inches long]

When they were all cut, I hand sanded them. if your blade is sharp you won't need a sander

(it will end up taking off too much material so sharpen those blades)

ree

Once they are all sanded, its on to stain. (you can stain them when their in place but we are using three different stains to create dimensions so its easier to do it before we put them on.

I chose Miniwax Espresso, Miniwax special Walnut and Mini wax classic grey (just a bit of this) you can go and soft or as bold as you like!

NOW STAIN THEM! Once thats finished, you need to let them dry and get your PL PREMIUM ready! You can use any glue but I love PL. get it in your calking gun and prep your space. clear your kitchen and wipe down your wall with a regular household cleaner to get rid or dirt and oils.

Now your ready to put them om. LETS GO! Into your kitchen. cut your first piece at 1/2 so 4 inches long and start in any corner you like.

Your going to come to outlets. I found it was easiest if I measured (twice) and labeled them ALL before I cut them, that way I wasn't running in and out all day making cuts.

Make sure you label them if you choose to do it this way or you will get inside and waste time playing Tetris with your pieces.

When you have them all cut and ready to go, start to glue. PL takes 24 hours to dry so take your time with placing them correctly and how you like them. this is the fun part.

I Chose to use a nail gun only behind the back of the stove. Level it out and tack it in (hammer and finish nails work great too!) The PL will hold the pieces on the back splash like Fort Knox once its dried but they have nothing to sit on behind the stove for the time being. Sp this method helps

Keep on going, its looking great!

Once your finished. Seal it with your favotire Poly. We used a Satin finish, no shine. and VOILA! You just upgraded the heck outa that space! Great job.
